Amethyst<\/a> is the purple variety of quartz, coloured by traces of iron and exposure to natural radiation. Its colour ranges from pale violet to deep purple, and it often crystallises in hexagonal prisms. Amethyst is widely used as a gemstone and decorative material because of its attractive colour and transparency.<\/p>\n Major deposits include Brazil, Uruguay, Zambia, Madagascar and Russia. The mineral forms in hydrothermal veins and magmatic rocks such as basalt, where it forms crystals in geodes. Its chemical formula is SiO\u2082 and its hardness is 7 on the Mohs scale. Variants such as chevron amethyst and Siberian amethyst are popular for their pattern or deep colour.<\/p>\n Sources: <\/strong> Lay-on stones are flat, tumbled and smoothly polished (precious) stones that, due to their oval to round shape and flat sides, are suitable for laying on the body, for instance during a relaxation moment. Compared to regular tumble stones and pocket stones, overlay stones have a more flattened shape, which makes them stay well in place. Despite this consistency, it remains a natural product, so variations in shape, colour and pattern can always occur. This can vary from one type of stone to another.<\/p>\n Generally, overlays have a size between 3 and 4 cm with a thickness of about 1 cm.
