Nefrite<\/a> is a compact, fibrous variety of the amphibole mineral actinolite, and is classified together with jade\u00efet as jade. The mineral usually has a green to grey-green appearance, with a silky luster and a characteristic toughness, making it suitable for working and decorative applications. Nefrite has been loved for centuries in Chinese art and culture, among others.<\/p>\n Major deposits of nephrite include China, New Zealand, Canada, Russia and the United States. The mineral is formed by metamorphic processes, often in areas where serpentine occurs. For split necklaces, uneven pieces of stone are used, with the split used varying from 5 to 10 mm, giving a natural look.
