Sand dollars are fossils of sea urchins, recognisable by their flat, round shape and fine star pattern. These marine fossils date back about 160 million years and give a good picture of life in prehistoric seas. Their shape and pattern make them very similar to contemporary sea urchins and related species such as starfish.
