It is known for its layered crystal structure and strong cleavage, which gives it a fibrous to leaf-like appearance. Its name is derived from the Greek "kyanos", meaning dark blue. Besides blue, kyanite also comes in colours such as black, white, green or grey.

Kyanite is formed under high pressure in metamorphic rocks such as schist and gneiss. Major deposits include Brazil, Nepal, Switzerland, India and the United States. Its chemical formula is Al₂SiO₅. A striking property of kyanite is that its hardness varies depending on the crystal direction: from about 4.5 parallel to the longitudinal direction to 7 in the transverse direction on the Mohs scale.

Sources:
Mindat.org, Gemdat.org, Wikipedia -
