Petrified wood<\/a>\u00a0occurs when wood becomes fossilised over a long period through the process of permineralisation, where organic material is replaced by minerals such as quartz. The original wood pattern is usually well preserved in the process, creating the recognisable wood texture in stone.<\/p>\n It occurs worldwide in areas with volcanic activity or rich in siliceous water, such as in the United States (Arizona), Indonesia and Madagascar. Its chemical composition is usually SiO\u2082, as it consists mostly of quartz.
