Scolecite Silver Pendant
Scolecite Silver Pendant from India
Scolecite
Scolecite is a member of the zeolite group and is known for its needle-shaped crystals and silky luster. The mineral is usually white, colourless or pale pink and often forms radiant aggregates or fibrous structures. Scolecite has a glassy to pearly luster and a brittle nature, making it a fragile but striking mineral.
Major deposits of scolecite include India, Iceland, the United States and South Africa. The mineral is formed in basaltic rocks as a result of hydrothermal processes in which zeolites crystallise. The chemical formula of scolecite is CaAl₂Si₃O₁₀-3H₂O. It has a hardness of 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale.
