Manganite Rough from Morocco
Manganite
Manganite is a mineral belonging to the oxides and hydroxides of manganese. It usually occurs as dark, shiny prisms or needle-like crystals with a metallic to submetallic luster. Its colour ranges from steel grey to black, and when powdered it exhibits a brown-black tint.
Manganite usually forms in hydrothermal deposits and in the oxidation zones of manganese-bearing ores. Major deposits include Germany, South Africa, Brazil and Ghana. Its chemical formula is MnO(OH), and its hardness is between 4 and 4.5 on the Mohs scale.
