Charoite Silver Pendant
Charoite Silver Pendant from India
Charoite
Charoite is a rare and striking purple rock known for its characteristic fibrous texture and shiny, swirling patterns. The colour ranges from lavender to deep violet and is sometimes combined with black, white or translucent inclusions. Charoite was only recognised as a new mineral in the 1970s and has been popular as an ornamental stone ever since.
The only known commercial site of charoite is the Mursinka area near the Chara River in Siberia (Russia), from which the mineral also takes its name. It is formed by metasomatic processes where syenite comes into contact with limestone. Its chemical formula is (K,Na)Ca₂Si₄O₁₀(OH,F)-H₂O and its hardness is 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale.
