Pinolite Silver Pendant from India

Pinolite

Pinolite is a rock composed of a combination of dolomite, graphite and magnesite. It is known for its distinctive pattern of whitish-grey, pine-like inclusions in a dark grey to black matrix, to which it also owes its name. The stone is sometimes mistaken for marble because of its appearance, but is geologically a different type of rock.

Pinolite is mainly found in Austria, particularly in the Styrian region. It is formed by metamorphic processes in which the three components crystallise together. The hardness of pinolite ranges between 3.5 and 4.5 on the Mohs scale, depending on the composition and proportion of minerals.
