Shattuckite Silver Pendant
Shattuckite Silver Pendant from India
Shattukite
Shattukite is a rare copper-bearing silicate valued for its deep blue to blue-green colour. The mineral often has a fibrous or compact structure and occurs in association with other copper minerals such as chrysocolla, malachite and azurite. Shattukite takes its name from the Shattuck Mine in Arizona, USA, where it was first discovered.
Besides the United States, Namibia, Congo and South Africa are also known deposits of shattukite. The mineral occurs as secondary copper ore in the oxidation zones of copper deposits. Its chemical formula is (Cu,Fe)₄(Si₄O₁₀)(OH)₄, and it belongs to the phyllosilicates. Shattukite has a hardness of 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale.
