Petrified Wood

Petrified wood occurs when wood becomes fossilised over a long period through the process of permineralisation, where organic material is replaced by minerals such as quartz. The original wood pattern is usually well preserved in the process, creating the recognisable wood texture in stone.

It occurs worldwide in areas with volcanic activity or rich in siliceous water, such as in the United States (Arizona), Indonesia and Madagascar. Its chemical composition is usually SiOâ‚‚, as it consists mostly of quartz. Its hardness is around 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale.

Popular varieties are distinguished by colour and origin, such as red-brown petrified wood from Arizona and black petrified wood from Indonesia.
