Gabbro Sculpture from Madagascar

Gabbro

Gabbro is a coarse-grained, dark igneous rock composed mainly of plagioclase and pyroxene. It is often confused with basalt, but gabbro crystallises deeper in the earth's crust, so the crystals are larger. The rock usually has a black to dark green colour and is used in construction and as an ornamental stone.

Gabbro occurs worldwide, with important deposits in Canada, South Africa, Italy and the United States. Because it is a rock and not a pure mineral, it consists of several minerals. Its hardness averages around 6 on the Mohs scale.

A well-known variant is Indigo Gabrro also known as 'Mystic Merlinite', a trade name for a particular form of gabbro from Madagascar with a distinctive black and white pattern.
