Celestine

Celestine (also called celestite) is a mineral belonging to the sulphates and known for its characteristic light blue colour. It often forms translucent to transparent crystals with a glassy luster, but also occurs in compact or granular masses. The colour is caused by small amounts of impurities and can range from colourless to white, grey or pale pink.

Celestine occurs in sedimentary rocks such as limestone and dolomite, often together with gypsum, sulphur and halite. Major deposits include Madagascar, Mexico, Spain and the United States (especially Ohio). Its chemical formula is SrSOâ‚„, and its hardness is between 3 and 3.5 on the Mohs scale.
