Lepidolite Sculpture from Madagascar
Lepidolite
Lepidolite is a purple to pink shimmering mica, rich in lithium. The mineral is often found in pegmatites along with other lithium-containing minerals such as tourmaline and spodumene. Lepidolite has a characteristic luster and flaky texture, typical of mica.
Major deposits include Brazil, Zimbabwe, the United States and the Czech Republic. Its chemical formula is K(Li,Al)₃(Si,Al)₄O₁₀(F,OH)₂. The hardness is between 2.5 and 4 on the Mohs scale.
Well-known varieties are purple lepidolite and pink lepidolite, depending on colour intensity and inclusions.
