Larvikite
Larvikite is a coarse-grained igneous rock from the feldspar family, known for its distinctive bluish or silvery luster, caused by light reflections in the feldspar crystals (labradorescence). The rock usually has a dark grey to blackish base, which adds to the brilliance. Because of this special appearance, larvikite is often used as an ornamental and building stone.
Larvikite is named after the town of Larvik in Norway, where it is also mined commercially. Besides Norway, the rock also occurs in some other regions, but the Norwegian varieties are the best known. It consists mainly of feldspar, augite and nepheline. Its hardness is around 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale.
