Jasper is a dense, fine-grained variety of quartz, often opaque and available in many colours. The stone is characterised by its unique patterns and hues, created by inclusions of other minerals or oxides. Jasper is often formed in sedimentary or volcanic environments.
Major deposits include India, Brazil, Madagascar and Australia. Its chemical formula is SiOâ‚‚, and it belongs to the quartz family. Its hardness is around 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale.
Popular varieties include red jasper, dalmatian jasper, mookaite jasper, polychrome jasper, breccia jasper and ocean jasper.
