Hematite on Mother Rock Sales Box from Morocco
Hematite
Hematite is an iron oxide mineral recognised by its metallic luster and dark grey to black colour, although the powder is always reddish-brown. The name comes from the Greek word for blood, due to the characteristic colour of the grinding powder. Hematite is an important iron ore and is also widely used as a decorative material in polished form.
The mineral occurs worldwide, with large deposits in Brazil, Australia, Canada and the United States, among others. Hematite occurs in both sedimentary and metamorphic environments and is often found in iron formations. Its chemical formula is Fe₂O₃ and it has a hardness of 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale.
